Part 2 of our More Than Just a Meme series. Here, we get into the nitty gritty of how we sequenced our own mitochondrial DNA and determined our own haplogroups.
Turns out the mitochondria is little more than just the “powerhouse of the cell”. By sequencing our own mitochondrial DNA, we traced back our maternal ancestry and this is what we found.
Fetal oocyte attrition is a poorly understood process in which approximately 80% of meiotic prophase I oocytes are eliminated through apoptotic pathways before birth. However, the primary triggers of fetal oocyte attrition are unknown. One hypothesis that has been proposed to explain this phenomenon is called “death by defect” which suggests that defective oocytes are preferentially eliminated in an effort to retain competent oocytes for the formation of primordial follicles.
